and background on Nonprofit Sector of Texas
On October 16 & 17, more than 500 representatives
from the Nonprofit Sector of the entire United States will
convene in Washington, DC for an unprecedented Nonprofit
Congress. The delegates and at-large
participants will focus on: (1) Identifying the values
that all nonprofits share; (2) Developing a vision and
priorities for the nonprofit sector; and (3) Exercising
a collective voice. Since 90 percent of nonprofits have
annual budgets under $5 million, the majority of participants
are expected to represent these groups.
The 20 member Texas delegation includes
folks from throughout the State, including: Silona
Bonewald, Tanya Debose, Marianne Ehrlich, Layla
Fry, Rose Mary Fry, Rita
Fryer, Hedy Helsell, Pamela
Lemoine, Frank Rene Lopez, Ray
McLeod, Richard Meyer, Cynthia
Nunn, Sandie Palomo-Gonzalez, Jason
Sabo, Jonathan Schick, Elena
Serna, Barry Silverberg, Tamara
Thomas, Teresa Wright, Daniel
Zorn.
As the Congress’ website (www.nonprofitcongress.org)
notes:
“The time has come for nonprofits of all sizes and
scope to come together. The nonprofit charitable sector
has long served our nation with distinction – from
helping individuals survive (through health care, domestic
violence centers, meals, and other human services) to helping
local communities thrive (through artistic, cultural, educational,
environmental, and other enriching services). Every
American has been touched at one time or another by the
work of a nonprofit.
Despite the value that nonprofits add to the quality of
life in America, the survival of many charitable organizations
is uncertain. Due to a convergence of factors – including
declining resources, increasing demands to deliver more
services, widespread misunderstanding about nonprofits,
mounting operational complexities, and fragmentation within
the sector – nonprofits find themselves operating
in a most challenging environment. The communities we serve
and the issues we care about suffer when we are fragmented
and isolated. Now more than ever, nonprofits need to unite
around our common values, develop a shared vision and priorities,
and exercise our collective voice for a better future. “
To share what will undoubtedly be a significant
experience, Nonprofit Texas/ Texas Association of Nonprofit
Organizations is convening a Briefing on the Nonprofit
Congress as noted above. Texas
delegation members will report on the substantive matters
discussed and any outcomes arising from the Congress.
Barry
Silverberg, TANO President & CEO,
and Richard W.
Meyer, TANO Vice-President for Public
Policy will co-chair the briefing. Congress participants
will join them in briefing those present.
Participation in the briefing will be
limited to those who register in advance. There is
no charge. Briefing
participants are free to bring their own lunches and
refreshments.
